Welcome to today’s blog on the ‘Coaching Conundrum : Is it a Must for NID, NIFT & UCEED/CEED Entrance Exams?’
When I first began my journey towards my design dreams, I wasn’t exactly aware of how to reach my first milestone - getting into a reputed design college. Design as a subject and field in itself was very new to me. It required much research on the subject matter and how to prepare for design entrances. And that’s where I stumbled across the age-old solution to competitive exams—coaching classes😅.
Whilst I cannot make the decision for you on whether you would need to opt for coaching, let’s break down the coaching conundrum as I did once and find out!
The first question I had was whether coaching is truly the be-all and end-all of design entrance exam success? Well, the truth is, it's not. While coaching can be a very helpful tool if harnessed well , it's not a one-size-fits-all solution. Many of my batchmates went for coaching. And many did not. Some students may benefit from the structured learning and guidance that coaching provides, while others might succeed with self-study and strategic preparation.
The key is to find what works for you and run with it.
I assessed what type of student I was and what my work ethic was. Whilst I had never gone for coaching before and had good discipline in terms of work, the lack of knowledge on the subject made me favor attending a coaching class for my preparations. I wanted to be in an environment with other creative thinkers and get in touch with visiting designers or the center's alumni. Coaching further improved my discipline and work ethic, and helped me consciously transition from art to design. I could focus more on preparing for design rather than figuring out how to prepare for design.
Inspite of the coaching, I still tried to put in some extra personalized preparation. With the tid-bits I learnt on my preparation journey and the experiences my batchmates had in their own self-study voyages, here are a few tips to help you get cracking without necessarily needing coaching:
Understanding the exam pattern: Familiarize yourself with the exam structure, syllabus, and marking scheme. Practice past and mock papers.
Mastering the very foundation of design: Brush up on design fundamentals like elements, principles, and design personalities and their work..
Practice makes better: Regularly sketch, draw, and experiment with different mediums.
Get that problem-solving knack: Improve your problem-solving skills and learn how to apply design concepts to real-world situations.
Be creative, always: Engage in creative activities, attend design fests and art exhibitions,, and participate in design discussions to enhance your creativity.
Stick to a schedule: Create a study plan, set goals, and track your progress.
Relax and enjoy the process: Don't forget to take breaks, have fun, and stay positive throughout your preparation journey.
So, there you have it—the dilemma behind coaching broken down for you. A glimpse into both routes of your preparation journey. To simply answer our blog’s question- coaching is not compulsory, and with the right mindset and strategies, you can achieve your design dreams without it. Research more about coaching centres and how you would have to self-prepare. But in the end choose the route which is best suited for you.🎨✨
