What are the disciplines offered at NID Andhra Pradesh?

Like all NID’s (National Institute of Design), the first year at Andhra Pradesh is also the Foundation year. This year is to build up your skills and get you in the grind for the things that are coming up. All the cool stuff only comes afterwards!

So, NID AP offers three major disciplines: Communication design, Industrial Design and Textile and Apparel Design for the Bachelor of Communication degree. As of now, only the B. Des program is available, but they may add the masters program later. Here, people of all disciplines come together to collaborate and share their learnings with each other. This way, everyone learns more and of course you get to spend more time with your friends. The disciplines don’t function as individual entities, but as three cohesive units that often come together so that they can make the most of each other.

So now, let’s dive deeper and talk about each of the disciplines in detail.

1. Communication Design

This discipline is a very visual heavy one. It involves multiple fun courses like typography, book design, camera art, illustration techniques, sound design, 3D modelling etc. I mean, putting it like that you don’t really get much. But I’ll try and explain. So, we play with letters, make crazy illustrations, write our own books, create our own music, podcasts, brands and so much more! Is that enough to get you excited? I bet it is!

Communication design, or any discipline as a matter of fact has a lot of room for your imagination. You can do whatever you want and get away with it! Of course, you do need to have an explanation for the things you make.

Here is the list of things offered (majorly) for you to refer back to and so you don’t need to search through the entire article again. You’re welcome.

· Drawing for communication
· Typography
· Illustration
· Book design
· Branding and packaging
· 3D visualization
· Sound design
· Infographics
· Character design
· Storyboarding, comics
· Camera art

2. Industrial Design

This discipline is actually the mother of all disciplines. All the other disciplines emerged from this one. At NID AP, in industrial design you get to learn about different materials, forms, ergonomics, research methods, different manufacturing methods etc. There’s even a really cool workshop where you can pickup up a saw, a hammer and whip up something magical! All students have access to this. As an industrial design student, you get to make models, your own products, and so much more. How awesome is that?

Here is the list:
· Materials and Processes
· Form studies
· Product design
· Ergonomics
· Usability testing
· 3D modelling
· Software skills
· Material innovation

3. Textile and Apparel Design

This one is a textile swimming pool. You learn everything about textile, from where it started, how it’s made, how a garment is made, how it is styled and so on. You dye things, make your own fabric, weave, stitch, crochet, knit, embroider etc. You even get to make your own paper! TAD people (that’s what we call them btw) have the coolest fashion sense and they end up styling the others too!

And, here is the list:
· Garment construction
· Weaving
· Specific textile and apparel methods
· Textile fibers
· Weave structures
· Surface design
· Dyeing techniques
· Draping and sewing techniques

To be honest, all the disciplines are equally awesome and you are probably going to have a hard time choosing. But, I hope this blog helped you out a little bit!
