What is taught in the Product Design (B. Des) course?

Meet Neha, a product design student enrolled in a B.Des Product Design four-year program!

She starts her day with a quick breakfast of dosa and coffee and then rushes to attend the first lecture of her day on design theory or history. After a quick tea-break, she then heads to a studio class or the workshop, where she continues to work on her latest project, using tools like sketching, 3D modelling, and prototyping to bring her ideas to life. She might have to cut her work short though if there is a master class on user research or materials science

After class, Neha pops in at the university library to borrow books on design trends or case studies of successful products. She rushes to make it just in time for the student community meeting where they discuss the work allocation for their next fest.

Exhausted but happy, she then makes her way back to her dorm, where she and her friends work on their assignments together. As her eyes threaten to close, she looks at her friends, her work and the empty thermos of coffee, and laughs happily.

As the days turns into months and years, her time there will begin to look like this:

1. Foundation Courses

- Theories and principles of design

- 3D design - sketching and modelling

- Materials and manufacturing processes

- Communication and media studies

- Art and culture history and criticism

- Computer graphics and design software

2. Product Design Courses

- History and theory of product design

- Industrial design processes and methods

- Ergonomics and human factors

- User-centred design and research

- Sustainable design practices

3. Specialization and Elective Courses

- Product prototyping and testing

- Design for manufacturing and assembly

- Product branding and marketing

- Digital product design

- Interface and interaction design

- Design research methods and practices

- Transportation design

- Professional practice and portfolio development

- Studio practice and professional development

Let’s not forget her involvement in exhibitions, showcases, collaborations, research projects, study tours and industrial visits.

(Of course, the curriculum may vary depending on the specific program and institution.)

In Neha’s four years, she will explore various aspects of product design, from understanding the history and theory of industrial design to learning about materials, manufacturing processes, and design methods. She will master the art and science of designing products that are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing, ergonomic, and sustainable.

And what of Neha after she graduates? With hard work, a good attitude and a stellar portfolio, she would most likely tread on on one of these routes:

- Product Designer

- Industrial Designer- User Experience (UX) Designer- Design Consultant- Design Educator- Design Entrepreneur- Research and Development professional

Does Neha’s life sound like something you want? Do you also see yourself designing products that are innovative, user-friendly, and environmentally responsible? Then I believe your journey in Product Design begins here!
