What is the NID admission process for the Bachelor's Program?

NID (National Institute of Design), opens admissions annually for both the masters and bachelors’ programs. There are currently 5 NID’s offering the bachelor’s program (i.e., Ahmedabad, Vijayawada, Kurukshetra, Bhopal and Jorhat) and 3 NID’s offering the master’s program (i.e., Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Bangalore).

We’ll be talking about the Bachelor’s admission process.

The NID forms are released around October – November each year. The NID DAT (Design Aptitude Test) Prelims exam take place in January (mostly) and the NID DAT mains exam is conducted in April – May. The Prelims exam holds a 40% weightage and the Mains exam holds a 60% weightage as of 2023. Both the exams are pretty different, so let’s talk about both of them.

1. NID DAT Prelims

The Prelims exam is to check how smart you are in terms of aptitude and overall creative drawing and thinking. The aptitude and drawing percentage ratio varies year to year, but it is somewhere around 70% drawing and 30% aptitude. You get 3 hours for the exam. The total marks are 100

First section is MCQ based and is objective while the second one is subjective. In the aptitude section, you are asked basic general knowledge, Mathematics, English and design knowledge. You are asked to draw comics, write stories, complete illustrations, perspective drawings and illustrate unconventional usage of products etc. for the drawing section. So, fellas, roll your sleeves, pull up your socks and brush up your skills!

One of the key things to keep in mind is that, you need to be yourself while you’re drawing or writing anything. Originality is very much appreciated.

2. NID DAT Mains

The Mains exam is a situation test. Only those selected in the Prelims round, can appear for this exam. This exam happens in the NID campus nearest to you. For the years 2020 and 2021 though, due to the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak it was held in an online mode where participants had to submit portfolios and appear for personal interviews.

Now, it is back to the offline mode. The Mains exam is also divided into 2 parts and is for a total of 100 marks. The 2 parts are:

 1. Studio Test

 2. Personal Interviews.

The studio test is a very hands-on exam that tests your material handling skills. The questions asked are very unprecedented, but can range anywhere from model making, storytelling, solving a problem, group discussions etc.

Only those clearing the Studio test make it to the Personal Interviews.

The Personal Interviews are where you get to show your charm! These are super personalized one on one sessions with the panelists. They can ask you absolutely anything. From your work, your passion, your hobbies, language skills and where you see yourself in the future. That was just a brief listing, trust me, they’ve got a lot of things to ask.

Yep, so that’s about the exams. After this, you select your campus based upon your final rank from both of the exams and you get in. Woohoo! Done!
