Which is the best design college in India?

When it comes to talking about what is the best and what isn’t, it’s pretty subjective. It all comes down to how you perceive things. But let’s talk more generically. Design is rapidly growing in India and deciding which college is the best, is a difficult task. But here are some factors to consider. The principles the college is based on, the faculties there, their past records, how long it has been functioning and of course alumina reviews.

As per popular opinion, one of the best design colleges in India is NID. The National Institute of Design, was founded back in 1961 in Paldi, Ahmedabad by Charles and Ray Eames. NID brought back the Bauhaus Design movement to India. Gautam Sarabhai and his sister Gira played a major role in the establishment of the college.

NID’s motto is hands on, minds on. Meaning, that the learning there is facilitated by doing and theoretical knowledge is secondary or rather you should do it by yourself. NID’s admission process is vigorous one, which enables selection of the most creative minds across the country. This is beneficial for everyone. Since people from all cultures and religions come together to create something new.

The way education is done at NID is very different from what we’ve all been doing since childhood. You know, that learn some chapters and go give exams concept. Not trying to imply that that system isn’t efficient, just that change is good. And a new system provides room for new ideas. At NID, you are allowed to think and do what you feel is right. As I mentioned above, you learn by doing. Mistakes are most welcome here.

Of course, there are many other design colleges which are an excellent choice. It all depends on what you’re looking for. There is National Institute of Fashion Technology,  IDC(Industrial Design Centre) by Indian Institute of Technology(IIT), MIT Art, Design and Technology University, World University of Design, Pearl Academy and many more. So, get out there, get searching and find what you need!
