The main NID, or rather the first NID that was ever to be founded in India, started in Paldi Ahmedabad in 1961 based off of the India report. The India Report was written by Charles and Ray Eames after an extensive study on India’s requirement for design education. They found a bridge in the current system and hence suggested the need of an Institute like NID for creative individuals.
So, all in all there are 7 NID’s as of now, in the following locations:
1. NID Ahmedabad (offers bachelors & masters programs)
2. NID Gandhinagar (offers only master’s program)
3. NID Bangalore (offers only master’s program)
4. NID Vijayawada (offers only bachelor’s program)
5. NID Kurukshetra (offers only bachelor’s program)
6. NID Bhopal (offers only bachelor’s program)
7. NID Jorhat (offers only bachelor’s program)
The Gandhinagar and Bengaluru campuses are extensions of the Ahmedabad campus. As of 2023, the rank wise list for the NID’s is as follows:
1. NID Ahmedabad (Gujarat)
2. NID Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh)

These disciplines aren’t further divided into sub-disciplines like Ahmedabad. You get to learn a little bit of everything when you are a part of these disciplines.
NID Ahmedabad has been functioning for the past 62 years now and has many connections and graduated students. It is the most experience amongst all the NID’s. The other branches are pretty new. They only came up recently and they are still building their ground. Though, the education quality offered at all the NID’s remains the same.
So, when it comes to talking about the best, I guess I’ll still leave it up to you all. It must be easier to make a choice now though.
